In the year 1968, Barbara Mackle was just 20 years old when she went through the most traumatic experience of her life. She was a charismatic young girl, everyone described her to be a sweet and friendly person. Her father was one of the owners of the Deltona Corporation, one of the biggest custom home builder companies in the USA. At the time, Barbara was studying at Emory University in Atlanta, which was affected by the chaotic Hong Kong Flu. Mackle and half of the campus contracted the disease.

Worried about her daughter’s ailing state and her hard work during the finals exams, Jane Mackle decided to drive from Coral Gables, Florida, where the entire family lived, to care for Barbara. When Jane arrived in Atlanta, on December 3, she convinced Barbara to stay with her at a hotel near campus so she could look after her while she studied for the exams.

On December 17, at 3 am, Barbara woke up to a knock on the door and asked her mother to go and see who it was. A man reported that Stewart Hunt, Barbara’s boyfriend, had been in a terrible car accident.
